Nowadays, there are both household refrigerators and refrigerators/ coolers for commercial purpose that use R-12 cooling substance which is an ozone depleting substance, and those that use HFC-134a (R-134a) which is a substance to replace R-12 and is not an ozone depleting substance. Most repair shops and cooling substance refill shops will repair both household refrigerators and refrigerators/ coolers for commercial purpose as the technology and methods for the repair/ maintenance of these two types of refrigerators are very similar. However, based on survey information, it has been found that the refilling of cooling substance is not correctly carried out. For example, technicians still lack proper knowledge and understanding about the repair/ maintenance since the repair of refrigerators using R-134a is more difficult than that of the refrigerators using R-12. Coupled with the repair shops’ lack of basic repair/ maintenance equipment, R-12 substance is overused. Therefore, the Department of Industrial Works in cooperation with the World Bank, TMB Bank Plc., and the Department of Skill Development has launched a project on “Phase-out of Ozone Depleting Substance in the Repair/ Maintenance of Household Refrigerators and Refrigerators/ Coolers for Commercial Purpose in Order to Phase out R-12 Cooling Substance” with the aim to assist the entrepreneurs of repair/ maintenance shops in reducing the use of R-12 substance in their repair/ maintenance work through the provision of correct understanding about the repair/ maintenance methods when using R-12 and R-134a. In this connection, after training, grants will also be given to the shops for the procurement of necessary tools and equipment such as vacuum pumps, pressure gauges, cooling substance leakage detectors, and cooling substance refilling equipment.
